Danny Glover’s “Toussaint”

Danny Glover’s “Toussaint”

Based on the 1791-1804 successful slave uprising in Haiti, “Toussaint” will depict the struggle of a Haitian revolution hero Toussaint L’Ouverture in his effort to lead his people breaking free from slavery to then establish the first independent black republic.

In recent news, Danny Glover has revealed that Don Cheadle, Mos Def and Angela Bassett are among the A-listers he has attached to this film. Yet you only have to search google or read Haitian forums to see that many still fail to fully understand the complexity and potential impact of this project. Many feel this is a Haitian story that should be told by a Haitian Director with a Haitian Cast speaking Haitian Creole. They fail to understand how complex the road to Haiti’s independence really was. We start wonder if after all the controversy floating around “Toussaint” from U.S. vs Chavez politics to uncertainty within the community about this project. We wonder if this story will ever be told? For some of us this is not about Chavez and this is not about Danny Clover. So why did it take Venezuelan Dollars and Danny Glover’s drive to get to this point? Could the reason be Haiti is not ready to remember someone like Toussaint? We have shamed this man’s legacy so many times we even forget how we got here.

But we need to remember this, this is not only a story for Haitians but this story is for all people, it affected the World, it shaped the future of France and the United States. Our History is important it helps us remember our mistakes. Can Haiti truly understand that Danny Glover’s “Toussaint” is also Haiti’s “Toussaint” - a chance to remember Haiti’s greatness even when we are stuck in a cycle of shame and ignorance. Our History says we can be greater than what we are today. Allow Danny Glover continue his project in peace and you will allow Haiti to wake up again.
