Haiti U-17 Team Run, Shame its not for the CUP

Haiti soccer kids defect in stop at JFK

From local News reports, thirteen Haitian junior soccer players deserted their nation’s team during a stopover at Kennedy Airport, apparently seizing a chance for asylum, officials said yesterday.

The players bolted between Tuesday night and yesterday morning as the team waited for a flight to South Korea for a tournament, said Felix Augustin, Haiti’s consul general in New York.

By yesterday afternoon, six of the 13 had returned to the airport and turned themselves in to team officials, Augustin said. It was unclear where they had been andwhy they had left the team, he said.

“All I know is that six of them have been retrieved and we’re still looking for the others,” he said.
The squad postponed plans to fly to South Korea while the search for the players went on. The tournament was supposed to be a tuneup for the Under-17 World Cup in August.

Adults from the local Haitian community may be harboring these young players. But to soccer fan this is a major blow to Haitian football, which was finally experiencing a recent surge of good news after years of dismal performances.

The under-17s had qualified for the biennial World Cup for the first time in Haiti’s history, while the Haitian men’s team won the Caribbean Cup for the first time in January.

What about the for the Under-17 World Cup in August? Who cares right? I guess the chance to live in America was a better goal to most of the team. Sadly some young kids in Haiti never get a chance like this.

If our brightest and most talented continue to run away who will represent Haiti? We just shame ourselves to the world over and over again to become servants in America.

Update: everyone found they claim they got lost :) lol!
